Background of the Conference

Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) for the first time attended the annual conference of IAPTC during its 13th meeting held at Stockholm, Sweden in September 2007. Since then BIPSOT is actively participating in all the annual conferences of IAPTC. The 16th Annual Conference of IAPTC was hosted by BIPSOT from 28 November to 02 December 2010 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The 19th Annual Conference of IAPTC was scheduled to be organized by Cairo Centre for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peace Keeping in Africa (CCCPA), Cairo, Egypt form 28 to 31 October 2013. Due to the unavoidable security situation in Cairo the executive committee of IAPTC decided to shift the venue in the middle of August 2013. At this point BIPSOT voluntarily took the responsibility to host the conference with the approval from Bangladesh Government.

Bangladesh Army and BIPSOT co-hosted the seminar at BIPSOT, Rajendrapur Cantonment.

Theme

The theme of the conference was: “Coping with Change: Leveraging Regional Training and Education Capabilities for Effective Multidimensional Peace Operations”.

Attendances

A total of 164 delegates from 73 Agencies/Organizations/Institutions of 43 countries participated in the conference. In addition to that, a good number of local participants have also actively participated to make this conference a successful one.

Opening ceremony of the conference was held on 28 October 2013 and Chief of General Staff, Bangladesh Army Lieutenant General Md Mainul Islam, awc, psc graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The programme incorporated sessions of Key Note Address on Coping with Change by Brigadier General Sohel Ahmed, Commandant BIPSOT, presentations on Emerging Trends by Dr Jose Pascal Da Rocha of UN Women, USA and presentation on Peace Operation 2025 by Ms Irene Eich of Centre for International Peace Operations (ZIF), Germany. At the end Major General Adrian Foster, Deputy Military Adviser, UNDPKO shared the views from UN. The event ‘Ideas Bazaar’ was organized in the BIPSOT Library that attracted the delegates with beautiful displays of books, journals, brochures, DVDs, photographs and souvenirs. In the evening a pleasant welcome reception was organized where Lieutenant General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq, ndc, psc Principal Staff Officer, Armed Forces Division of Bangladesh cordially welcomed the distinguished delegates.
