   Geography
 

Bangladesh has an area of 1,44,000 square Kilometres with a  population of 140 millions and lies astride the tropic of Cancer on the  northeastern side of South-Asia. It is bordered by India on the north , west and east and in the southeast by Myanmar. The coastline of the  Bay of Bengal runs along the south. Dhaka is the capital of the  country where all the government offices and other corporate offices  function.

The plains of Bangladesh are covered by a vast and complex network of rivers. The major rivers are the Meghna, the Padma, the Barhmaputra and the Jamuna.

The areas of Sylhet and the Chittagong Hill Tracts are mostly hilly covered with forest. The country is also enriched with one of the most exotic mangrove forest called Sundarban forest located   on the south west along the coast.

  Climate
 

Bangladesh is hot and humid during the Summer (April-October) and cool and sunny during the winter (November-March). During the monsoon (June-September), it rains heavily and the average rainfall is 200 cm. Average daily temperature ranges from 5 degree Celsius  (minimum) in winter to 36 degree Celsius (maximum) in the summer.

  Population
 

Of the 140 million population, over 90% are Muslims, the rest are mainly of Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.

  Language
 

Bangla is the state language of Bangladesh. However, English is also extensively used in the Government offices and fairly spoken by the common people of the country.

  Communications
 

Though the dominant mode of transportation is the waterways but the country has a very good public transportation system by rail and road. The rail and road systems link the major centres, inland ports and the sea ports. Air transport is provided by Bangladesh Biman and private air lines which links the main divisional cities of the country. Bangladesh Biman, the national air liner provides international connections to almost all the continents.

Participating trainees are expected to carry out  pre course study so that they can have better assimilation during the course. Pre-course knowledge expected from the students are :

 

General knowledge on UN and Peace Support Operation.

Practical  experience on driving vehicles.

Knowledge on English Language.

  Eligibility

Officers of the rank of Captain/Major or equivalent with minimum 6 years of commission service.

  Training Timings

   

Working days in the Institution are from Saturday through Thursday. Fridays is observed as weekly holiday.  Training period starts at 0730 hours and terminates at 1345 hours. For outdoor exercise or night training, separate timings will appear in the training program. Afternoon games/classes will be organized and intimated through training program.

  Arrival/Reporting Dates

Overseas Officers. Overseas officers are requested to arrive at least 2/3 days before the commencement of the course. They are requested to inform BIPSOT about their arrival schedule at least 7 days before the arrival so as to facilitate reception.

Officers of Bangladesh Armed Forces.  Officers of Bangladesh Armed Forces are requested to  arrive BIPSOT 24 hours before  the commencement of the course.

  Administration

Dress.  Students are requested to bring following dresses :

 

Working uniform & uniform for outdoor exercises.

 

Services Dress, Mess kit and equivalent dresses.

 

Sports kit and necessary civvies.

Accommodation.   Officers will be accommodated in BIPSOT mess. All rooms are furnished with necessary items of furniture. Bedding are provided by the institution to all. No accommodation for students’ family will be provided by the institution.  All sorts of house facilities will be provided to overseas officers only.

Messing. Officers will dine in BIPSOT Mess. Mess bill will be served on monthly basis. Normally Bangladeshi foods/continental foods are served in the mess. Any other exceptions may be provided as ordered. Students are requested to abide by the mess rules which will be issued on arrival.  Meal timings will be exhibited in the notice board.

Medical.   Combined Military Hospital, Rajendrapur will provide necessary medical support. However, students will be referred to Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka if necessary. All overseas students are required to submit a medical fitness certificate on arrival at the centre.

Leave/Weekend. Leave will not be granted during training periods except on extreme compassionate ground. However students may avail weekend with permission to leave station if permitted by BIPSOT authority depending on their course activities.  Overseas officers will have to obtain clearance from their respective Embassy/High Commission for availing leave. 

Transport.

Transport will be provided for following purposes :

 

 

  Official duties like attending routine, official function/parties, going to Embassy/High commission for official requirements (overseas officer) etc.

  Ambulance for reporting sick.

A transport service up to Dhaka Cantonment on weekend is provided by the Station Headquarters, Rajendrapur.

Local civil bus service is available from Rajendrapur to Dhaka everyday from morning till evening.

 Telephone and Fax. Telephone and FAX facilities connecting inland and overseas are available in the institute.  Officers can call in land and overseas on sport billing payment system.  

Internet and E-mail.  Student officer can avail the internet facility available in the institute.

Banking. Sonali Bank, Rajendrapur Cantonment branch is located within the cantonment area. Among many others, following overseas banks also operate in Dhaka, Bangladesh:

Financial Aspects.   Expenditure and recovery of charges are as under: 

  Personal Expenditures Messing in the officers’ mess and officers’ club charges are to be paid by all student officers. Besides, charges for laundry and mess subscriptions are to be paid.

   Recovery of Charges.  Recovery of personal expenditure will be claimed through the officers monthly mess bill and the same to be paid by 10th of each month and before leaving the center (for the last month only).  Recovery of charges for overseas officers will follow as per MOU.

   Money Changing.  Money changing facilities are available in Dhaka city in prescribed banks and hotels.  Overseas students are advised to get some money changed to the local currencies from the airport banks on arrival as it may not be readily available at Rajendrapur.

Library Facilities.  Adequate number of  books and publication on UN peace keeping operation are available in the institute. UN information center located at Dhaka is also available for reference materials.

Marketing Facilities.  There are local markets inside and near the cantonment from where daily necessary items can be purchased.  Local unit canteen also keep household and toiletries items.  Besides, any item can be purchased from Dhaka city by the student officers while on weekend or on demand through mess.

Barber/Laundry.  Barber and laundry services are made available by the Institute.

Photographs. All students are to submit 4 copies of passport size photo in uniform without headgear (Colour) with personal data form.

Guest.   Officers may entertain their guests in the mess. No lady guest is allowed in the living accommodation.  However, they may be entertained in ladies room available in the mess.

Stationery.  Officers are to procure their own stationery during course. Certain stationary items will be issued during exercise without any charge.

Recreational Facilities.   The officers’ mess has  TV room,  and music facilities. Tennis, Basketball and Volleyball courts are also available in the Cantonment. These facilities can be availed by all student officers.  Social evenings are arranged in the cantonment on regular basis. A course dinner will  be arranged at the end of the course.

Driving License.  Officers must be in possession of a valid national/ international driving license.

Identity Card/Passport/Visas.  Overseas officers will be issued with a temporary identity card by the Institute. Officer are requested to carry the card all the times while going out from the Institute.   As the duration of the course is for one month, the overseas officers must ensure that they have visa for at least two months.

Batman.  Batman are employed for overseas officers by the Institute if asked for. Officers are to pay Batman salaries as fixed by the Institute. 

Student Personal Data  A blank  proforma for the purpose of registration is attached with this instruction.  All officers are to complete the proforma and  send it to the institute  at least 7 days prior to the commencement of the course.

Medical Certificate.   All foreign student Officers need to deposit a Medical Certificate duly signed by the competent medical Officer on arrival to BIPSOT.
