SOUTH ASIAN PEACEKEEPING EXPERIENCE
SEMINAR |

A
seminar titled “South
Asian Peacekeeping.
Eexperience” jointly hosted by
Bangladesh and US was held in Dhaka
from 8-12 February 1998. Bangladesh Army hosted the seminar with
assistance from Headquarters, U.S. Commander in Chief, Pacific
(USCINCPAC) |

and Headquarters, United States Army Pacific (USARPAC). The
seminar's participants were military officers and civilian officials from
Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The seminar's
international observers came from Canada, China, Indonesia, Japan, the
Philippines, Russia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, and
observers from the United Nations. This unique seminar was the first
attempt by the troop contributing nations of South Asia to capture the
many lessons painfully learned over their long and distinguished history
in the field of peacekeeping. The Peacekeeping Experience Seminar idea
originated with the Bangladesh Army leadership. |

South Asia
Peacekeeping Operations Gaming Seminar was held in Dhaka |
|
September 2000.
Senior leaders from 17 countries in the Asia-Pacific region met in
Dhaka, Bangladesh from 23-28 September 2000 to discuss
strategic and operational issues related to multilateral peacekeeping
operations. The participating countries included Australia,
Bangladesh, Canada, China, India, Japan, Madagascar, Malaysia,
Mauritius, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Sri
Lanka, Thailand, and the United |

|
|
States who had
high-level interest in peacekeeping operations from a range of |
|
backgrounds
including military, civil police, civilians from the ministriesof defense and
foreign affairs. The Bangladesh Army and U.S. Army Pacific
co-sponsored the event with the assistance of the Center of Excellence in Disaster
Management and Humanitarian Assistance, and the United Nations
Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

In October 2002
Bangladesh hosted Command Post Exercise on Humanitarian Assistance and
Disaster Relief Operations (CPX on HA/DR) co-sponsored by US |
|
III Marine
Expeditionary Forces. It was a computer simulated exercise.This exercise was conducted on post
disaster scenario.
Officers from Bangladesh Armed Forces and US III Marine Expeditionary
Forces participated in the exercise. The exercise was named as "EXERCISE ASHAR ALO" ("EXERCISE
LIGHT OF HOPE"). |

Un Peace Support Operation Course for
SrilankaN
Armed Forces |

This institution
conducted a course on UN Peace Support Operations Course for Srilankan Armed
Forces from 21 July 2003 to 31 July 2003. Total 20 officers of the
rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Major and Captain of Srilankan Army
attended the course. |

NON
LETHAL WEAPONS SEMINAR (NOLES)-01-03

This institution conducted a seminar on use of Non-Lethal
weapons from
09 September
2003 to 11 September 2003. The seminar was co-sponsored by US
Marine Force Pacific (MARFORPAC). Total 35 participants from
Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldives and USA attended the seminar.The aim of Non-Lethal Weapons Seminar (NOLES)-01-03 was to
promote the use of Non-Lethal Weapons (NLWs) to minimize |
|
|
loss of life and damage to infrastructure as well as at
seeking new ways to handle unrest in order to prevent or stop
human rights violations during any Peacekeeping Operations or
internal low intensity conflict. During the first two days of the
seminar staffs from the US |
|
|
Joint Non-Lethal Weapons
Directorate (JNLWO)
made presentations covering case studies, aspects of the
Law of Warand Rules of Engagement (ROE) for NLWs. Following
the presentations,
senior military
officials from participating countries discussed their
concept
of |
|
employment of NLWs and tactics in humanitarian
assistance, disaster relief and Peace Support Operations.
Concurrently, a squad of Marines with NLWs expertise trained their
Bangladeshi counterparts in the use and employment of the NLWs. On the final day (11
September 2003), the Marines and Bangladeshi personnel conducted a
practical demonstrationon the use of NLWs
for the |

|
senior
leadership in attendance and thereafter the seminar ended with a
closing ceremony. |

The EXERCISE BLUE TIGER 04 is Peacekeeping Map
Exercise and was conducted from 22 to 26 February 2004 for a duration five days in
Dhaka. The exercise was jointly hosted by Bangladesh and UK. |

Marine Air- Ground
Task Force (MAGTAF) Tactical Warfare Simulation (MTWS) Command Post
Exercise (CPX) will be held in BIPSOT from 03 April 2004 to 08 April
2004. Bangladesh Armed Forces and US Marine Ground Task Force will
participate in this exercise. Initial Planning Conference of the
exercise will be held on 07 and 08 January 2004. |
